Even if I were a full-time, stay-at-home mom, we would not be doing a lot of extra activities. But, working afternoons makes even the few activities we are interested in difficult. If one of the children is interested in something, we will find a way to make it work. I may have to ask an extended family member to take them, rearrange my work hours occasionally, or use a personal day. It’s hard, but the rewards are so very worth it. I’d take a look at some of the tips in this article, and if you have more specific questions, I’ll be happy to offer my two cents worth.
Let your child determine when the conversation has ended. I notice that when I give her those extra few minutes (and really, it’s often only 3-5 minutes), she leaves satisfied that mom cares. And why work at home if you’re not going to be available. I don’t care if that comes in 10-minute chunks on three different days.
Find Support and Encouragement
That you CAN manage both homeschooling and working outside the home (whether full- or part-time). If it is best for your children and your family, it can be done. With the school year approaching and homeschooling weighing very heavy on my heart the self doubt was setting in about being a self employed workaholic trying to home school.
I have 4 boys between the ages of 3 and 9. I’ve worried that I won’t be able to give my kids and house the attention I should, but it really comes down to priorities and organization, doesn’t it? I’m a single mom working outside the home part time+ while homeschooling my 2nd grader. WOW am I glad I have foud this…..so many gems here! While I live in Pennsylvania, one of the best resources I’ve found for working parents who homeschool is this list from Homeschooling in North Carolina. There are forums, essays and all sorts of help, from practical tips to simple reassurances that it CAN be done.

The cooling fan I invested in pays off daily. I dread the day that comes when I need to replace it. Half a cup later and I am ready for Instagram.

I should be in bed but instead, I chat with a mom on Facebook about homeschooling and the exhausting day she’s had. We swap life with teen stories and then I close up. Happy we’ve been able to connect, after all knowing you are not alone is a big reason of why I do what I do. After supper, the dishes are done (again!) I clean up and make the coffee for tomorrow. Happily, tomorrow is a full school day and I don’t have to leave the house.

There are homeschooling moms who work outside the home. I think back to when my youngest was born. My labor and delivery nurse was actually a homeschooling mom. She worked at the hospital and then she also homeschooled her kids at home. I work with 2 life coaches as a collaborative team.
If you’re planning on working outside the home and homeschool your children, you’ll have to pare down your extra commitments. Now is not the time to head up VBS or volunteering for extra work shifts. Even after three years of homeschooling, I’m still amazed at the flexibility of our schedule. We’re able to start our school year when it fits our family, taking longer breaks for holidays and birthdays, or scaling back when new babies arrive.

My kids were used to me sitting right beside them doing the schoolwork. I start with the program they already knew. Start with something they’re familiar with, whether it’s a workbook, an online program, whatever they’re used to using.
